Blossoming Peach: original oil painting on canvas by Jie Gu Wang This is a picture that shows the real China. China, today, is still filled with small towns, just like this, dotting the countryside. It reminds me of my home state, Pennsylvania, where there are little groups of houses, throughout a state that is mostly rural and still lost in a bygone era. Thus, it is with China, at present. Most people who visit China might only see the big cities that are more famous for tourism and more tourist-friendly, in their conveniences. However, this is the real China and, coming from the Pennsylvania Dutch area, I can appreciate it for what it is. Beyond the architecture, which is typical, streams and canals also often flow through these small hamlets; many even have a small pond within the bounds of the village. Some are even total water villages, like Venice, wherein the streets are canals, and there are only walking/bicycling paths along the canal's edge; this might be one of them. |
